mk3 into mk2 gti engine swap
« on: 17 April 2009, 14:14 »
if anyone has done this advice would be great, i changed the engine from my mk2 1.3 to a 2.0ltre 8v mk3 lump,

i thought there would be a few issuies but thought it would only take a few days it took 4 days to get the rite parts to put it in and it doesnt drive right,

this is what ive changed,

used a 2.0 8v mk 3 engine with mk2 gti gearbox flywheel and clutch,
mk2 gti engine mounts,
mk3 gti driveshafts brakes,

the wheels seen to sit completly wrong i havnt changed the wishbones though,

so today i have got a set of mk3 wishbones which are slightly longer and may sort the problem hopefully

if anyone has done this conversion it would be great if you could tell me about any problems you had,

cheers

what do you mean by 'wrong'?  if you mean they sit too far forward or back this is becasue you fitted MK3 5 stud bearing carriers to 4 stud wishbones (presumably, since you fitted the mk3 driveshafts?)
This is becasue the ball joint fixing on the 5 stud bearing carriers is slightly offset comparted to the 4 stud ones.

problem with fitting MK3 wishbones is they wont work with the MK2 anti-roll bar, assuming you have one fitted.  If you dont, its no problem. if you do Passat 5 stud wishbones are what you need, they have the ball joint fixings in the right spot, and will work with a MK2 anti roll bar :)

yep thats true, spacers on the rear either on the hubs or by taking off the stub axles and putting them there would fix this :)
I'm thinking maybe the rear beam was swapped over as well, but we'll see what euro says

nice!  if you peel back the carpet in the footwell you'll see a big round inspection cover, pop that off and you should be able to see the captive nut (well, its more of a round dome!)
smack a suitably sized 12point socket onto it and hopefully you can hold it still to undo the bolts. From there either replace it with a proper nut and put up with having to put a socket thru the floow whenever ya want to remove subframe or wishbone, or cut away enough of the floor to get at it with a welder to fix it.

edit: heres the hole, its the one ofn the left. you'll need to cut as much as shown to peel the footwell skin back enough to get your welder in there

heres what you'll be fighting with

ah yeah i know the one, in that case you can just swap the wishbones & shafts over to go back to narrow track :)
I have seen someone cut a hole in the front of the chassis where that front captive nut is, and weld it down.  Unless you mean the front bolt on the wishbone itself?
