To a diesel warm air is the key, that's why loads of effort is placed on getting cold starting equipment running right on the injection system.
It's more to do with ensuring the compression stroke of the engine has enough help from the warm air in the cylinder, as it keeps the lining warm and aids combustion as warm air has more power to it than cold air (that's why boilers use warm air)
Either way a cold air feed will not help as with cold dense air comes moisture, and with moisture comes half assed combustion.
