Help/Advice with brakes and wheels
« on: 16 April 2009, 12:47 »
Hi all, been a while since I was last on here - mostly due to trying to rebuild my life after a series of events that most people could do without.

Anyways, last time I was on here, I'd got myself a MK3 2.0L 8V GTI for the princely sum of £175.  It was a non-runner, but I got it running after discovering an immobiliser fault and generally gave it a good tidy-up (refitting headlining, new gearbox oil, engine oil, cam-belt, plugs, leads, etc).  Got it an MOT and taxed within a few days of getting it all together, so I was well chuffed!

Then the problems started, it's now had new front shocks, 3 new wheel bearings, new stereo (after a small fire inside the old one!), new throttle body, new thermostat.

Today my mate is fitting some lowering springs to it, and I'm off to the breakers later to take a look at some better alloys than the 9-spokers that the car had as standard.

I've used the search function, and the general concensus seemed to be 16" offeres the best compromise - anyone fancy confirming this or trying to change my mind? :undecided:

My current headache is that the brakes on the car are crap (and that's putting it mildly).  It turns out that the slides/mounts on the rear calipers are worn so the whole lot is moving around - if I pump the brakes it seems a bit better, but I've definitely got no air in the system and both me and  a local mechanic came to the same conclusion.  So whilst I'm looking at alloys today, I'm going to grab some new calipers/mounts too.  So what I need to know is, are there any upgrades for the rear calipers (i.e. other model calipers that fit/work well) and I'm considering upgrading the fronts whilst I'm at it, so what works well there?

Cheers all, any help appreciated

Hello Si..

Well if you end up buying brake pads avoid ebc greenstuffs in my opinion, low dust.. your kidding me you ebc chaps! and the braking is no noticable difference from stock items,
My tuppence worth on your braking situation anyway, infact i may have a similar problem with my rear calipers..i'm sure the braking on mine should be a lot better than it is,

Cheers

If you look up in the Info/Maintenance section you will see  a thread called 312mm brakes. If you click on the links in that thread you will get all the info you need on uprating brakes.

Yes 16" diameter wheels are a good compromise.

Cheers chaps

As things have worked out, I landed a set of Audi 17" wheels and pretty tidy condition, a set of brand-new rear calipers, caliper mounts and an induction kit for £100 - top breakers!!

Unfortunately, as it turns out, one of my wheel bearings was dead-easy to replace, but the other side has pretty-much welded itself together (drive-shaft/hub not shifting even with a 10t press)..... looks like I'll be going back to the breakers tomorrow to get more parts

Anyone know where I might find a decent price for a set of 4 225/40/17 tyres?

2 things the wheels may not fit if they are genuine unless they are from a early A3, 2nd 225/40/17's are the wrong size you need to use 205/40/17.

They were on a Mk3 GTI before I got my mitts on them, but yes they were off an early a3.

Funny though, I thought the guy said I'd need 205/40/17 tyres, but one of the wheels has a tyre still fitted which is 225 wide (totally shagged and scuffed in unusual places, so possibly the tyre was just fitted to roll the car about on) :undecided:

At least the 205 wide tyres will be a little cheaper
