Slipping Clutch
« on: 14 April 2009, 07:36 »
Morning guys...

This is a really dumb question.  But. Over the last few days my clutch has started slipping.  Initally it was only in 5th, but it seems to do it in 3rd and 4th now anywhere after 2500rpm.

I know the mk3 is an auto adjust job, so is the only thing this can be is the clutch? I guess I'm looking at around £450 for this eh?

Asking how long a peice of string is I know but any idea how many miles I may have left on it as I got a bit of a trip coming this weekend!!

Cheers guys.

clutch is about 80 quid mate, 100-150 labour to fit it, cheaper if you got a homie in the hood who can do it :)

get a mate to depress the clutch as you watch, just to make sure its moving the full range.
But yes it does sound as if you need a new clutch.

Just DONT go to Mr Clutch!!

Thanks for the advice guys........

Batty, Unfortunately mate I don't know anyone of that calibure, not that I would trust with taking my car to bits anyway.....  but Ive grabbed a recommendation from the good guys section and thought id give them a go, local VAG Specialist... Quoted me 230 all in, but his going to check it first, would rather pay that little more and know its done proper.... Sounds like he knows his stuff...

Len, Im sure I came across your other thread and you had a murder with them, unlucky, before seeing this post I did actually speak to someone from Mr Clutch, quoted me 209... Even when I was on the phone they didn't fill be with confidence, thanks for the advice mate. Did you get it sorted in the end?

Wasnt me who had problems with them recently but I did post in that thread. Not heard how that guy got on!

My dealings with them are from way back and TBH they did a good job but took way longer than they said.
Was about 12 years ago and on a Renault 21.
But have heard so many bad stories about them over the years.
Basically they employ cheap labour and they can do what they do but if problems come up they are lost!

make sure you change the rear main crank seal, 5 min extra job but very worth it... mine went (only had the car 3months) and had to replace whole clutch (less than a year old the mech recond). Source the parts your self, i got a new clutch kit for £68, seal for £8 and the labour cost me £160.
