that'll be a rod box, any MK3 2.0 8v box will be a direct fit using existing clutch, as will a MK2 16v 2y box.  Not that I recommend you leave the old clutch in there!  MK3 GTI 8v and MK2 16v have larger input shaft on box see.

MK1/2/Scirocco 1.6-1.8 box will fit with a clutch swap, as will MK3 1.8 spi, however 1.6 boxes will have 90mm flanges so need to swap the flanges from old box.
Best ones to have ratios wise are MK1/2/3/Rocco Injection ones, the MK3 GTI box has slightly less sporty ratios than the earlier GTI boxes.

Lasst thing to worry about is your flywheel, if its a later MK3 it'll have a singlew dowel flywheel that will only work with the later MK3 GTI clutch kit, so this limits you to using MK3 GTI and MK2 16v box. However if you get a 2 pin flywheel from an earlier MK3 or MK2 1.8 then you can use whatever clutch you want, 8v or 16v (just make sure its a 210mm fly and clutch kit)

Oh and on replcement box, do the pushrod bush and seal as well as the input shaft seal while its off.

VR6 box wont fit as a) bellhousing is completly different shape to suit VR block, and b) its cable shift/hydro clutch.  If you want to convert to an 02a cable shift/hydrolic clutch gearbox, a MK3 16v/TDI, Corrado or Passat box would work
