My new GTI and some questions

Hi guys,

Had had a MK2 16V which I was going to track some months ago, you guys were a great help, however I never finished that project seperation / divorce put pay to that, anyway, long story short I'm back and have just picked up a nice 8Ver.



The cars very tidy, I want to keep it as standard as possible and have a few questions;

1) What colour is this? (sorry it just says "Green" on the log book)
2) There's a little blue smoke on starting only, I'm told this is the valve stem seals and it's not a big problem just a little oil runs back into the pots when the cars standing and this burns off in a couple of seconds. After starting there's no evidence of any smoke at all. Is the valve seals a common problem?
3) See the pic below, all these button are marked for windows, however the rears are handles, should there be other buttons here or blanked switch covers?
4) Can the "computer" be reset, there looks like two buttons to be pressed next to the display but don't want to start proding around until I know what I'm doing, are there any instructions around.
5) Where's the oil temp sensor for the computer, the temp is not displayed so guess there's a wire off or duff sensor?

1. check out http://www.a2resource.com, there should be a paint code in boot/service book, starts L...
2. yep sounds like the stem seals!
3. sounds like rear lifters may have failed and were jusat replaced, if you pull the middle buttons forward see if there is any wiring, if so you have the complete 5 door window kit!  cars with only front electric windows would have just 2 buttons and 3 blanks.
4. yep, slide and hold the MFA button all the way across to the side which you want to reset, 1 for current trip, 2 for average since last reset
5. on the oil filter housing, black/green wire. it will display --- till oil is over 50degrees tho

Many thanks! No wiring behind the middle button, will have a closer inspection when I get home to see if it's been disconnected and is floating around. However starts me thinking about why these switches are there in the first place, is it a replacement centre console etc.
