HELP! VW immobiliser / ECU problem
« on: 04 April 2009, 20:52 »
Hi Folks,

First post so be gentle

Ok I have a 96 MK3 GTI 16v, in addition to the VW standard immobiliser the car had a dealer fit conlog.

Now at some point in the past, before I owned the car the Conlog has been 'removed', more accurately unpicked, leaving just the VW standard kit.

The car has unfortunately been sat for a while with a flat battery and now won't start, all the dash lights illuminate and the engine turns over on the starter.

There appears to be no spark and the petrol pump doesn't run.

Given all this I assume the VW immobiliser is playing up. To diagnose the problem I've hooked up a vag-com PC and read the fault codes and sure enough I get:

'Immobiliser prevent engine start'

Ok I cleared the error, removed the key etc and tried to start the car, no joy just as before. However this time when I connect the vag-com I don't get the previous error instead I get.

'Basic settings not set' (or something like it)

So my first question is does this mean the immobiliser now accepts the key and the lack of starting is down to something else, possibly the 'work' done to remove the Conlog?

A friend gave me a 'paired' immobiliser, key tied to the reader ring and ecu from a scrapped 16v Golf GTI, I replaced the whole lot leaving the 'good' key strapped to its reader ring which was wired to the immobiliser (hope that makes sens).

Using the original key in the ignition I tried to start the car, nothing. Using vag-com I get 'Immobiliser prevented engine start' however with this ECU/immobiliser pair when I clear the error, remove the key etc the error returns.

Where do I go next?

Any tips / suggestions appreciated I'd hate to consign what's a real tidy old lady to the scrapper because of a simple electrical fault.

Cheers

Simon

Hi, thanks for the link. I'd already found this, very useful but not exactly what I need.

As the dealer fit conlog was 'disabled/removed' prior to my buying the car I can only assume the unpicking was successful but possibly not all that reliable.

My problem seems to centre around the factory fit immobiliser. Or so I've decided have a I made a grave error?

Thank again

Simon

Why not have it removed and replaced with a new immob.

You need to follow the VAG COM instructions to adapt the ECU to the old Immobaliser.
Its very easy to do, hopefully this solves your problem.

if it was the factory immobilisor then the fuel pump would still run and it would fire for a second then cut out, so the issue is elsewhere, probably something to do with the alarm if it immobilised extra circuits?  Not sure about the 'basic serttings not set' as we never got that in my mates abf when the immobilisor was kicking in, just engine fires for 2 seconds before cutting out with vag-com error 'engine block by immobilsor'

Cheers thats very useful, my license for VAG-COM arrived today, so as soon as I can I'll be out tomorrow morning to have play.

I'm halfway through taking the dashboard out to give me a clear look at the wiring etc.

Cheers for the so far guys, much appreciated
