Steering screeching...
« on: 05 April 2009, 19:40 »
Hey Guys,

Picked up my new baby this weekend (1990 'H' 16v with PAS), and all seems in pretty reasonable shape, with a couple of minor snags to sort out (guess that's the shape of things to come)

The most irritating thing is a fairly loud screeching noise from the engine bay with the steering at full lock, both on the move, and whilst stationary. Also, when I dry turn the wheel whilst stationary, from centre, it makes the noise momentarily. It does it in both directions, but only when you're turning the wheel away from centre, not towards it (if that makes sense).

I'm not very mechanically minded yet, as I've only owned modern cars up to now, where nothing goes wrong, bit I am trying to learn!

Have been searching the history of the forums, and have come up with the PAS belt as the prime candidate, but maybe the PAS motor or PAS fluid level (it's just above min by about a cm).

Has anyone had this before, and know the solution, or maybe know some more tests to aid diagnosis

Grateful for any help you can give!

i would say it is the PAS belt slipping

there is 2 on them , 1 for PAS and one for alternator/water pump

best to change them both :)

My elcheapo belt needs renewing every 6 months or I get the same effect. Every time I buy one from gsf and tell them what I need I always come away with the wrong size and dont realise till the cars jacked up and the belts off
