Was thinking of getting some touch up paint and filling in the odd stone chips?
Has anyone ever tried this??

That's the usual remedy mate once chipped = touch up paint or nose cone respray..

Any other form of formal protection really would need to be done/applied when new or after a nose cone respray for best results..

Good point.. if you already have a few chips then probably no point in getting a protection film - but again, its your choice.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
That looks pretty bad Sharpie and the paintworks not so good either   The reason why modern VW paint is rubbish is because of an EU directive - its now water based instead of lead based and chips a lot more easily.  Ditto for other makes of new cars too I'm sure.

I agree the paint seems really thin / fragile.  I have a lot more chips on my tornado red than I've ever had on any other car.  Seems to scratch if you look at it.

If you apply the touch up with small artists brush then cut it / fine polish (lots of elbow grease) you can get a decent result.

Good guide here
