can anyone tell me what the knock sensor does and where it is on an 8v digi

it picks up knock or pinking so the ecu can adjust ignition. on frount of engine block left side on pb about 2/3 way up

the wiring to mine is in bad condition is it best to get a new one from VW or do places like GSF sell them

About 50 notes from VW - not sure that GSF etc. do these. Be careful tightening new one - RubJ is the man for this - make a search for knock sensor.
