tightening sump bolts
« on: 22 July 2004, 18:26 »
i have brought a 10mm 3/8 drive socket (the smaller ones)
as i'm trying to tighten the sump bolts... on the 8v gti.
i got a 3/8 drive one as the 1/2 is too big.....
and the 3/8 is smaller and seems to go inbetween the sump and the gearbox... it also seems to catch on the sump and the clutch housing cover!. but ive only got a short extention bar and at the moment it doesnt reach in enough! and if i either find (if i have one) or buy a longer extention bar will this do the job.......

just wondering is this right to use a 10mm. 3/8 drive because nothing else seems small enough....

is this  what you use.......
what do you use.........?

Sounds about right, those bolts between the gearbox and sump are a pig!
Get a nice long extension bar, and go easy, as they shouldn't be tight, don't overtighten them.
Later models have allen key bolts instead, so a very long allen key will fit in the gap, believe it, on later models the gap between the sump and gearbox is even smaller  :o
Good luck geezer  ;)

Infact a 1/4 socket and long extension bar will make the job easier for you, make sure you get the socket on straight cos otherwise you will round off the bolt.

I usually use a 1/4" drive socket with 6" extension. Fiddley but it does work.
