wow this is the first time any of your cars has ever failed? you must have had some nice motors matey, my 2006 gti just flew through first mot no probs and so did my type r civic but my luck ends there as all my previous cars were rs turbos etc with shopping lists of work upon mot time lol 

lol just a Clio, MK4 and now the MK5 so nothing too exotic lol

Yep, mine failed its very first MOT on the CV joint gaitor. Fixed under warranty tho.

Is this a known/common problem for mk5s?

Yeah they are getting more and more common, especially on TDIs.
