You need this
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/accessories/-00-wire-wool/prod_377.html

and any metal polish you want really (i use megs next)

The one on the right has been cleaned (the left still caked in grime - right was the same)

Both cleaned

The wire wool will not inflict any heavy swirls (minor ones) and will remove hard coked up grime. The metal polish will then remove all the tiny swirls from the wool (i dab the wire wool into the megs metal cleaner and run in) Requires alot of elbow grease ;)

As stated, use 00-grade wirewool.

I use a method I read about here on the site to clean my exhausts:

1. Spray engine degreaser in and around the exhaust tips. Leave for a good while.
2. Agitate with brush (I use a cheapo alloy brush from halfrauds), wipe.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 several times.
4. Start the car up and gently dab the throttle to get rid of any remaining loose crap.
5. Clean with cloth and apply polish
6. Work using wirewool if necessary
7. Polish with MF cloth
8. Buff off with MF cloth

Solvol Autosol - use a strip of cloth about 2" X 8" in a sawing motion to clean the pipes and alot of elbow grease to get at the tips. Wire wool or a Dremel if they are really coked up but they will leave scratches. Autosol will bring them up shiny like chrome if you work at it

Shiny exhaust tips really finish off the back end of the car!
Essential elbow grease IMO!

Wow, loads of great tips guys, thanks! The car is supposed to be getting a full valet, can guarantee they'll "miss" the exhaust though... And i totally agree with it being the finishing touch on the back of the car.
