Rear Bias Valve or just a heavy right foot?
« on: 14 March 2009, 22:57 »
Took my little one to football training today, had to brake hard as the traffic stopped suddenly, and the rear nearside left locked up. Whilst my son thought it was "Cool" as there was so much noise and smoke and asked me to do it again, I was not so inclined! Just wondered if the rear bias valve can get a bit stuck and think the car is heavy at the rear? Car is not lowered, new original spec suspension all round, so ride height should not be an issue here. I always thought the rears were pretty weak in terms of braking? I am going to practice a few "Emergency Stops" alone tomorrow and see how it goes. Maybe I have become too accustomed to ABS and DSC luxury of late!!! What do you think? - I was not driving like an idiot by the way

You REALLY shouldn't be able to lock the rears prior to the fronts.  Get underneath and check it.  It's extremely likely it'll be cruddy and nasty as hell.  It will probably need changing, although you might just want to check it's adjusted properly and able to move as the suspension moves.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Thanks DH, I will get it checked, do you know if new ones are still available or is it a case of stripping it down and giving it a good clean up?

I have to say I'd be rather windy about hosing a key component in my braking system with WD-40 and beating it with a hammer.

For the sake of £40 and about an hour of careful work you would be better swapping in a new one.  I've replaced a couple - they're not hard to do.
