It's not good, only really two options if you are hell bent on keeping it.

1. Get a new set of con rods & a haynes manual, time consuming & probably cost a fair bit in a garage afterwards if you aren't familiar with servicing & timing.

2. Cheapest option, find a good second hand replacement engine, could always go for something more pokey too if you felt that way inclined & either swap it yourself or hand it to a garage to make sure it's done right.

Engine repairs just aren't worth it anymore, too labour intensive so garages charge the earth.

Good luck.

I agree with eighty, replacement engine would probably be the cheapest option, good luck.

If its an 8v ive seen them go for 60-100 quid, you only need the block and head. Its a straight forward swap.

Even a garage wont charge massive amounts to swap a whole engine,  having it rebuilt however does cost a hell of a lot, most garages will sent it on to an engine company.  A rough price, for my 16v full overhall (new con rod bearings, piston rings, valve stem etc.. )  was the best part of £800. I doubt it would cost you that much, you would need the crank re ground, bottom end bearing shells, new con rods.  Really just isnt worth it.  I presume the bottom end gave in without warning too?  which would make me wonder if there was another problem within the engine that caused that in the first place....

If you feel up to doing it your self, including cambelt, clutch and full service i put a 2E 8v engine into my gti for just under £220.00
