16v query.....
« on: 10 March 2009, 21:47 »
Hi dub dubbers,

I recently bought a Mk2 golf GTI 16v, its had some work done on it by GTI Engineers, bored out to a 1.9, gas floxed, inlet, outlet etc etc...
It drives great and flies. But it has a few odd problems and I need some help as it's a little different to my MK1 GTI.

Faults:

1) The oil temp isn't showing on the dash, Is the oil temp sensor/sendor underneath the dizzy cap? if so ive tried earthing the wire and still nothing shows... any idea's ? just buy a new sensor or is it more ??

2) The engine gets real hot. like really hot... and the fan kicks in later than i think it should. on the motorway its not a problem, but round town its hot. the water pump seems ok... is it a bad sensor for the fan ? or something else ?

any help would be great.

Also i'm after a decent stainless twin pipe tailbox... it has a single on the back and its pure sick !!!

cheers guys.

Mike. grin

Ello,

1) You can swap the wires round the on the other senders to pinpoint if its a faulty sender iirc
2) If the fan is kicking in thats good, if it really bothering you, neuspeed do a 180 degree thermostat and fan switch

This might help:  http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=54282.0

When your MFA temp is working you'll know how hot your engine is getting. My 16v at the minute hovers around 100 degrees, but in summer rises to 110. Compare your oil temp to your water temp - large differences between the two point to a failure somewhere e.g. thermostat.

16v only has a single speed fan, which iirc cuts in slightly later than the slow stage of the 2 speed fan like you would have had on the MK1 :)
how hot does it get on the dash gauge?

Oil temp sender is around the back of the head on the distributor side, black and green wire form memory.

About £15 from VW and just unbolt and refit.

Be prepared for a little oil to piss out when you do it.

The water temp gauge reaches about 3/4 then the fan kicks in, Ive ordered a new fan thermo switch, but i was thinking maybe it could be the thermostat be stuck closed or just closed... that way the engine isn't getting the full flow of water that it should ???

The oil temp still isn't showing after testing the oil temp sensor. so maybe it could be the wire or MFA ???

hard to test ?

cheers.

thats fine, exactly when the fan should be kicking in :)
as long as it drops down to about half before switching off, and stays around half when you're driving about, all is well.

Hi Dubs;

All problems fixed, poor connection on the dash clocks for the oil temp, and bad thermostat for the cooling !. sticking. Ill change the thermostat and give it a run round town, see what the water and oil are reading!

Ill give it a wash and polish and get some pics on.,

Cheers Mike. Anyone on the Hartlepool area running clubs ?  cool
