Personally I think a single airbag is probably not worth having and could cause more damage than prevent!
Afterall the inertia reel belts should stop you hitting the steering wheel.

IMO the best safety feature on a car is abs brakes!

The new Beetle is a MK3 underneath isnt it?
Cant you rape one of them for a wheel?

I was in a serious pile up in an Escort "ahem" and only one cars air bag went off out of 7! even more disturbing was that one car was a top spec Ncap Renault at the time and the drivers seat ripped from the floor it was only the air bag and the windscreen which stopped him being ejected, this accident seriously slowed me down.....
The main reason i got a MK3 was because the two accidents i had in MK2s left the cars really badly buckled and twisted at a low speeds and the MK3 has had some thought put into it design.
It is probably good to have airbags and the like but avoiding the accident is even better so ABS, good tyres/brakes and not being a numpty is better by far.
The worst bit of a serious smash is the slow mo as you watch your bonnet crumple and get closer......
