if it spins freely when torqued  check with plastic  gadgue.  littel strips of plastic  you stickin then measure how much they spread when crushed.  but freely spinning and no streacks is a good sing
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

If it doesn't work, how much am i looking at for a new head? And how do i tell a good un from a bad un?

8 v heads are tough  generaly.  but no really way to tell by just looking.  if have chance look to see if there are cracks between valve seats  they rarely crack but thats where they do if the do.

have it overhauled before fitting as it's liekly got a lot of miles on anyway.   new valve guides, stem seals  and a skim is well worth it
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Plus a quick skim will get your CR up ;)

Make sure the machining place measures it first though, incase its been skimmed before.
