camshaft sprocket confusion
« on: 06 March 2009, 14:28 »
i am confused about my camshaft sprocket markings
i have a 89 gti pb and am setting up via rj digi set up and having a few problems so thought i would start from the beggining
so i went to check timing marks and noticed 2 punch marks on the sprocket one small shallow one on the front which i used when i timed up after belt change and a deeper one on the rear and the markings say brazil and some numbers
i have another one which has a shallow punch mark and a notch/groove on other side with markings that say germany and some numbers
does anyone know which mark needs to be on which side or do the markings/part numbers face in or out
can anyoe spread any light on this for me
cheers

If you are setting up your can after, say, a belt change, then the punch mark on the rear of the sprocket should line up with the top of the rocker cover bolt flange. In this position, both cam lobes on number one cylinder should be facing away from each other horizontally, and not vertically. ie, not pushing a valve down.

i see i was thinking that when the front mark was at tdc the rear one was level with top of head and should the writing/numbers be facing in or out as im not convinced i refitted it the right way when i did engine swap

just been out and swapped sprockets over and belt fits better and never noticed till now that the german one i just fitted the face is more or less flush and the belt sits nicely and the brazilian one that was fitted before the face was recessed about quarter an inch and belt sat just off back edge

if you arnt sure best thing to do is whip the rocker cover off. problem is the cam sprocket is also used on the intermediate shaft, hence punch marks on both sides. When the sprocket is the right way round the cam is should be at tdc when the punch mark on the inside face of cam sprocket is lined up with the top of the cylinder head with rocker cover removed, front face.
