Rev counter not working
« on: 18 February 2009, 16:28 »
Hi guys,

I recently bought a Mk2 with a 1.8 16v Kr engine - the rev counter does not work.. Could someone tell me what bits I need to check to find the fault? I tried searching but couldnt find anything that helped

Help is much appreciated thanks!

First thing to check is to ensure the send wire has not become disconnected from the coil. On an 8v digi Its a red & black wire with a wide white plastic connector which goes on to 2 prongs on the underside of the coil pack. Its the only wire like it, the others are single pin connectors and the single ignition lead that goes in to the centre of the coil. I dont know if its the same on a Kr but would imagine its similar.

if the car runs ok then as above its either the black/red wire to coil, or the clocks simply need reseting by pulling the fuse.
If neither of those help the wiring behind the fusebox is at fault, or your clocks are shafted!  One thing, does the mpg display on the trip computer seem to work?

Right ive looked at the wires underneath the bonnet going into the ignition coil - theres two red/black wires going into the negetive and one of them is connected.. Also tried resetting the dials and had no luck

The car was orginally a 1.6 driver so it doesnt have a MPG read out - should I try replacing the dials with another set? Is there anything else I can check before I do this?

Thanks for the help

hmm is it converted using a proper 16v wiring loom, or was it hacked together?
There should be 2 blackred wires as you say, 1 is for the rev counter the other is for the ISV controller.  This connects to the coil from a second wire hanging out of the rev counter wire with a spade plug on the end.  Have a look at the 16v setup how2 there is a good pic of it in there.

If it has been bodged in you might have 2 wiring looms side by side, need to figure out which wire actually runs to the fusebox.

Swappign the clocks might help as it could be they're broke, but this wont give you the MFA on its own you'll need all the MFA loom to go with it, which may or may not be there depending how well the conversion was carried out.
