Its quite a straight forward job especially if there are two of you to do it.

Essentially you just need to remove the gear linkage the earth strap from the battery to the gearbox, the speedo drive, dis-connect the clutch cable from the release arm, undo the gearbox mount (remove the expansion tank to make this easier)

Once done, undo the hub-nut on the N/S drivers side then undo all the inner driveshaft bolts and break the seal of the shafts to the box. Remove N/S driveshaft, then undo the bottom bolts on the gearbox (including the 11mm ones for that pesky crescent shaped metal plate.)

Support BOTH engine and gearbox with jacks/crane or wood and undo starter motor bolts and remove starter. Then undo top gearbox bolts and remove the box. You'll probably find that you need to persuade it before it'll split from the engine but be ready to catch it or ensure you have good support for it.

Can't think of anything I've missed but I'm sure someone will add if needed.

Id say while youre there check the dratted metal water pipe that runs across where the engine and gearbox meet as it always rusts and sometimes changing the box can be the final straw for it if you catch it getting the box in and out. If it even looks semi perished then it would be the ideal time to change as they arent cheap!!

soo true. I damaged the metal water pipe when i removed the gearbox. A new one was 30 notes from vw

Removing and fitting the box was abit of a pain (without lifting equipment) as the driveshaft flange got caught behind the flywheel.

You might want to change your clutch while your at it. Get a genuine vw one. Im no expert but was pretty straight forward.
