MK3 - wipers wont cancel
« on: 27 January 2009, 09:36 »
  Help!!!!!

My Mk 3 wipers wont cancel.

I could stop them by pushing the arm forward, but now they are on all the time?

Is there a switch/relay which needs replacing or do I just replace the control arm, if so, how do I do this?????

I would start with the relay, since its easy.  check out me fusebox faq to figure out which one it is :)
next I would try another stalk, just need to get the wheel off (24mm nut, 2 allen bolts on the back if it has an airbag) and its 3 screws holding the stalk on.  If that doesnt help then look at the wiper motor itself, bit of a pain to get to on a mk3 as you have to pull the scuttle trim off, which means the wipers have to come off as well

My rear motor did pretty much the same thing, ran forever and stopped when it felt like it, turned oput to be the motor at fault.  Actually if you listen to the relay, you should hear it click when it wants to trigger the wiper, if its not clickign but the wipers are off on their merry way you can be reasonably sure its not the relay.

Great,  many tks for that info, will give it a try.

No clicking from relay so looks like its the arm.

Do I need to disconnect the battery before removing the wheel?

Also, as the car is not a GTI, just a std 1.4 MK3, can I fit the slightly different GTI arms, or are the wiring connectors different?

should be fine to leave the battery hooked up, i assume it hasnt got an airbag? gti stalks will fit straight on, it'll just have an extra plug on you wont use!

Yes disconnect the battery and wait ten minutes for it to discharge.

Otherwise you will get an airbag fault light on and need a VAG COM to cancel it.....

My Mk 3 wipers wont cancel.

It's trying to tell you to scrap it.

Is there a switch/relay which needs replacing or do I just replace the control arm, if so, how do I do this?????

The only solution is to take it to your local scrapyard.  The whole car needs replacing with one of higher quality.

Also, as the car is not a GTI, just a std 1.4 MK3, can I fit the slightly different GTI arms, or are the wiring connectors different?

Because the engine is too small you won't be able to replace the column stalk on its own.  It's the whole car, or nothing.

I have a set of Golf3 stalks here, if you want to take a chance and not scrap it.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

"It's trying to tell you to scrap it."

I know, just got it through the MOT for another year, it is close enough to the end, but as we taxpayers now own most of the motor industry I am waiting for a £3000 scrappage tradein deal for older cars to be introduced by the Tartan Tosser - Mr Gordon Knowitall and his Mr Darling Chancellor in April to clear the backlog of new cars in the country.
