Ok thanks for help so far guys, is there anyway of getting a fob to work with my alarm? all i have is one key that starts the car, thats it lol

really would like to get it working again, is it as simple as buying fob from ebay and assigning it to car?

Also does anyone know how much it costs to get a replica key cut? or is there a chip inside etc?

try a good key cutting place (most cobblers etc) as they can provide a coded key using your original, and your stuck with the alarm!! Try vw but I guess thery won't have your car codes recorded now? and you'll need to buy the fob from them!

is there no way to buy a second hand one and assign it with some kind of key in ignition method?

there must be a way to overcome this kind of problem, im guessing a lot of people loose the fobs?

try the local paper or yellow pages etc  for a key coding specialist, had a guy come to us for a car with no keys a pug 306 phaze two so built in chip like the late MK3 gti. He made up a key to the car coded it and charged £50 plus VAT. VAG will charge you an arm and a leg.
re the fitted alarm if the LED's are not light chances are its been disconnected as mentioned. my cabriolet mk3 has signs of two prevous alarms but like yours, as it is after 1996 it is fittted with a chipped key so I dont worry about it.
If the fluid is ok on the pas pump check the belt as they do become loose and they are adjustable. re the pulling yes get it tracked etc.
