changing back to small bumpers.
« on: 02 February 2009, 01:11 »
My '86 gti has been fitted with big bumpers, G60 arch trims and side skirts by a previous owner trying to 90 spec the car, he also fitted a bee sting aerial and done a corrado interior swap.
I got some small bumpers in the garageand fancy taking it back to the factroy look but have a few questions.
I've read that when fitting big bumpers extra holes have to be drilled in the wing, so If i swapped back would i have nasty holes on view? i know i would need to get diffrent indcator lenes and a early gti chin spolier but are any oter bits needed, I'm sure its not as easy as swapping them over?
The arch trims and the front bumper are a bit of a crappy fit and could do with sorting out, the bumper slides off the mount on n/s wing, can this be tighted on somehow? the archs are missing some screws or are cracked. I find then to be a lot of hassle and a rust trap so would rather do without but as the side skirts are screwed on I would be left with a row of holes so it would seem that the skirts and trims have to stay, can I some how bolt these arch trims on?

all 90spec small bumper cars have the extra holes, so no worries there.  you need to check to see if the lower valance is still there, its not fitted at all on big bumper models and it gets in the way of fog lights if fitted too.
you could drill extra holes in the arches, on mine i put a hole + rivet thru the bit behind the front bumper as i hadve next to no wings left underneath
