Trying to find an idiots guide, so i can sort out the breather pipe on a mk3 16v, so i can stop the t/body getting gunged up and lowering the octane of the fuel due to oily vapours....anyone?

If it's breathing that heavily then it sounds like you have a bigger issue to address, rather than just going for the sympton.
If you must fit a catch-tank it's just a hose into a container - something as basic as a Coke bottle will do.

I can think of about 101 better modifications to make to your motor before you add a catch tank.
Here's a test for you - disconnect the breather, shove it into a Coke bottle and go for a drive.
If it's faster against a timed exercise then it might be worth doing.
A tubular exhaust manifold or a good re-map is more likely to liberate rather more power than your proposed modification though.

oil vapors arnt really an issue. the abf breather is desinged to catch and return 99% of the oil back to the sump anyway, amount of vapor vs air flow meh
