2.0 8v - clicking when reversing???
« on: 19 June 2004, 21:42 »
Hi guys - I'm looking for a bit of advice about the clicking noise that comes when reversing  :(

There's no noise when going forward at any speed - the previous owner thinks that it's gearbox related and has helpfully provided a 2nd hand box.  But, before I look at fitting the other box, I'd value any thoughts on what might be causing this.  My thoughts are more driveshalf/CV rather than gearbox...

Any thoughts/suggestions on what to check/fixes would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance guys - as a new member (and GTI owner) it's great to see such a friendly (well, mostly... ;D) and helpful chat group.

Cheers,

Dobbs.

PS - forgot to mention that the current box is not the original.

The first box had major probs, so a 2nd hand unit was fitted - this is why the previous owner thinks that it's the box making the loud clicking noise when reversing.

However, could it be that the driveshaft or CV etc. were not re-installed correctly and if so, what would I need to look for?  The noise itself does not really sound like a gearbox-type sound, but it does awaken vague memories of a driveshaft problem that I had with a 'bug' many years ago.

Thanks in advance for any help or sugestions.

Cheers,

Dobbs.

As you can see mine is doing the same thing, Had it verified that it is a weak reverse gear, the replacement cog though is ?39 plus vat and quite a coman requested part according to the VW parts man.
The worry is the lay shaft if that has been damaged by the broken cog then its a recon or 2nd hand box.

Hey guys - thanks for your replies.

After a bit of further investigation today, it's looking more and more like the 'box - bummer, I was hoping that it would be a driveshaft prob as that would be easier and cheaper to fix.

Robiwill - interesting to hear that the reverse cog might be a weakness in these 'boxes.  Did he also mention anything about replacing the cog i.e. undo these 4 bolts and replace, or am I living in cloud-cookcoo land?  ???

It's sounding like a trip to the local breakers might be in order, unless any good folks out there can advise on replacing the reverse cog?

As a matter of interest, anyone like to advise on the 'best' way to replace a 'box in a MK3?

Thanks guys for all advice,

Dobbs.
