mk2 16v stalling probs !!!
« on: 23 January 2009, 13:00 »
Hi guys, i have had a look around and this looks like the best place for advice and everything VW. i know i should not be asking tech questions on my first post but i'm potenially going to buy a mk2 16v at the w/end,  i have been told that it drives fine but if you are approaching a r/about and go to slow down it cuts out! it starts up straight away and off you go! i have been told that it does not do this all of the time and if the revs are low that it does not cut out! in order to stop the problem the guy has swaped a lot of elec and intake bits ie air intake from a corrado but it still happens! any advice would be greatly appreciated thaks guys! james.

The 16v K-Jet system is really basic, yet quite fiddly at the same time. In other words, its probably something quite simple, but it'll take a lot of patience to find it (unless your lucky and cure it with the first thing you try!!). If I really liked the rest of the car, I wouldn't let it put me off as it SHOULD be a cheap fix, unless your unlucky, e.g. its a fuel pressure related problem which can get expensive to sort out if you need to buy a new pump and start replacing rusty fuel lines. A basic check for fuel delivery IIRC is to drive it on a bypass at 70mph in third, which should expose stuttering/popping if fuel delivery is poor.

To be honest, that cutting out problem is most likely to be an air leak or CO2 setup fault, or a relay issue maybe, but as with any car with a "known" fault, you have to really like the rest of the car to warrant the risk. Afterall, there's plenty of fish in the sea.
