Starting Problems!
« on: 01 January 2009, 18:17 »
Hi, need help.

Over the past month or two my '89 16v has been struggling to start more frequently.....especially when hot. It turns over quite a bit and eventually sputters into life. Once running there are no problems at all.

This morning I went to fire her up and all I got was half a turn before the battery died, the clock went scrambled but other electrics still worked.

Got the friendly neighbour round with some jump leads and went to start the car again and just got a lot of starter motor turning but there seemed to be no spark. Left it 5 mins with jumps still on and then fired her up with throttle fully open and she just about sputtered into life.

Now I was hoping it's the battery that's on its way out but the way the car struggled to start whilst being jumped has worried me.

Any of you guys have any thoughts from past experience maybe?

Oh and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Also search for problems with the fuel accumulator (keeps fuel pressure up between startups). In the meantime, when starting, try turning the ignition on and off ten times or so (you should keep hearing the fuel pump prime each time) before you actually try to fire it up as this will build up system pressure.

Cheers for that. I'll try it when I take it for a battery test tomorrow.

Probably been paranoid that it could be something complicated......just that'd it'd be about right the way my lucks been going!!!
