« on: 05 December 2008, 20:54 »

Im considering buying a mk2 gti, iv always wanted one but never bought one i currently drive a mk2 fiesta xr2, im just worried i will be dispointed with the golfs power, iv read a lot of reviews where people has been dispointed with its performace.

im just after some gernal opinions do they feel quick, are they reliable? what mpg do you get is the 16v much better than the 8v?

i have £1000 to spend can i get a mint one for that?

you won't get a mint 16v for £1000 i'd have thought but you never know. owners of 'mint' or low milage cars ask silly money.

8vs are slow, 16vs less so - but will get blown away by most modern hot hatches.

For a grand don't expect a minter as said above, if you want a mint condtion 16v you will be looking at 2k min. If you dont mind getting your hands dirty and sorting a few bits them its gonna get cheaper.

As Sharpie said, you won't get a mint gti for a grand. You could get a very respectable do-er up-er though.

I've got a 16v, had it for 6 years and has been very reliable. The only problem is that even the youngest mk2's out there are pretty old and you'll find there's always something on its way out which needs replacing.

Power wise I think it's great. Only when you really want to go for it though as the power kicks in after 4k revs. If you spontaneously want to rip up the road you'll have to resort to severly downchanging and redline it all the way!

I get 30mpg on average and I like to make progress, you'd defo get more if you like a leisurely cruise.

Anyway, hope this helps. I wouldn't think you'd regret it if you did end up getting a mk2. I fell completely in love with mine.

Good luck.

if any of the mk2 owners are like me, then they always wanted to own a mk2 at some point in their life.

mine cost me £1200 for a helios blue 90spec G plate 16v gti 3 door (VW factory tinted windows) lowered and on a set of mirror polished estoril's (looked beautiful)
just a slight bash on the back quarter from a carpark ding.

unfortunatley it was a 18yr old car that had passed through 9 owners, all of which must have ragged the engine to death, because after about 4 months in my owenership the head gasket needed replaced/re skimmed all valves re-cut.

despite now owning a rock solid mkIII 8v 2.sl0w which is immaculate (bar a few rust patches on the door sills)
i dont think given the choice i would ever want to own any other VW except the mk2 16v (ideally a silver 3door 16v) or maybe a decent Corrado.

looking at the current market, most minters are fetching over £3000 at least, there is a nice example on ebay of a 16v silver with the licence plate GTA asking over £4000 i think...

SO..........if your budget is £1000 THEN you may be dissapointed, you might get a bargain, hope you do!!!, but i didnt buy my golf for its performance i bought it because it was/is an iconic car that i always wanted to own!!!
even when i take mine out for a spin, it still gives me a warm glow, there is about 5 decentish mk2's that ive seen in Edinburgh and mine was one of them (until i stuck it in storage)

i actually think that the Peugot 205 GTi 1.9 was a better car on paper.... but its a no brainer for me!

Er, test drive one!

Jokes aside, the performance of my 16v is best described as "Huge bang per buck", because although there is plenty out there that is faster, the balance of power, handling, style, likeability and cost are nigh on perfect.

In terms of 8v vs 16v, mentioning those words is like a sin in here (check this mega-huge thread:  http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=7750.0), but in summary, the 8v is better around town, the 16v better on the open road. If you read the original 16v sales brochure, it was supposed to be a "focused drivers car", a bit like the Type R Honda of its day, so it is meant to excel when driven hard.

MPG, I get 34 average.

an 8v will be a bit quicker than your xr2 , a 16v will blow your mind.

Agreed.  An 8v is very sensitive to state of tune, but one on the money will be quicker than your Festa.  16's are monstrous, but finding one that hasn't seen abuse?.............

to be honest you could pick up a mkIII vr6 2.8 for about a grand atm!!!... and would probably experience far less problems with it if your not mechanically minded
