Hello and a quick question... or two...
« on: 01 December 2008, 18:21 »
Hello everyone.

My name is J from south west london and I am new to VW's. Last night I picked up a Black mk3 N plate with too many doors for a bit of a knockdown price on fleabay

I am not new to Gti's as I have had a Pug 306 Gti6 for a couple of years but couldn't resist what I thought was a bargain :undecided:

Anyways, it was an uneventful drive home (thankfully) and it is now safely in my garage where I can find out if it is lemon or not. Things are looking a bit yellow on first impression but I am not afraid of getting my hands dirty. There are a couple of things that I am looking forward to sorting out myself (tired suspension, dodgy windows and a bit of rust) but there are a few ponters towards the head gasket being on the way out. :embarassed:

So... what I need to know is how can I tell if the engine in the car is a 1.8 or 2.0 litre. According to dvla vehicle enquiry the car is a 2 litre 8 valve and this is backed up by some of the paperwork that came with the car (there wasn't much, unsurprisingly). However I have a friend who is a long time dub fan with a 2 litre 16v. He is absolutely convinced that until I speak to someone who knows for definite I should assume it is a 1.8 litre.

So can you help me out guys?

hello.

1. 306GTIs have no relationship to Golf GTIs.
2. It will say on the block if it's a 1.8 or 2.0L. If it's a 16v it will say DOHC 16v on the inlet manifold.

Hello Sharpie.

1. I don't want to turn this into a Pug vs Dub slanging match. I only meant that I am not new to the concept of owning a GTI whether it is German, French, Spanish or even Japanese. They are both great cars that are fun to own.

2. Where on the block do I need to look?

After a bit of digging around on the interweb I found this :

Volkswagen Golf Gti History

Mk 1 1977-1984
1977 first UK registration

1.6-litre, 110 bhp

Mk 2 1984-1992
1.8-litre, 112 bhp

1986 launch of 16V; 1.8-litre, 139 bhp

1989 introduction of big bumpers

1990 production of one millionth Golf GTI

Mk 3 1992-1998
2.0-litre, 115 bhp

1993 2.0 16V, 150 bhp

Mk 4 1998 onwards
1.8-litre, 125 bhp

1.8-litre turbo, 150 bhp

1999 2.0-litre, 115 bhp

2002 1.8-litre, 180 bhp and 1.9-litre GTI PD, 150 bhp

2003 - Golf GTI celebrates 25th Anniversary with special edition model

It seems to have answered my initial question though. If correct, there were only 2.0 lumps in the mk3 with a simple choice of 8v or 16v.

Is this the generally accepted view of the established members on this site?

Welcome to the site.

All mk3 GTI's both 8V & 16V were 2.0, your mate is wrong to fit a PB 1.8 (late mk2) in yours is a large amount of work.
