Need to find a spare wheel
« on: 22 December 2008, 10:12 »
Reet here's the thing:

Bought an import and although i knew that it was likely not going to come with a spare space saver wheel i thought that sourcing one wouldn't be an issue......

Contacted my local dealer to buy one only to be told that a 17 inch space saver is not a listed part that they can order! Seems a bit silly to me as all UK spec GTI's come with a spare so how do you replace them if they get damaged etc!?

Any ideas where i can source one from? I imagine that a full size spare will not fit in the space provided under the carpet.

With my folks moving to France and the wife's folks.. well being Dutch we will be doing a fair bit of driving abroad and what good is a repair kit when your tyre gets shredded  :embarassed:

The space saver wheel is actually an 18",   125/70 R18  99M, and should be available from VW. Full size wheel will fit in the boot, but the carpet/boot floor is lifted by about 60mm.   :nerd:

I ditched the space saver in pref for full size spare and have no issue with the minor reduced boot space/raised floor.

Search for one on E-bay and setup an e-mail alert

I finally found one on E-bay -  unused for £50  - including the foam tray and all accessories etc.

x1. forget about the skinny space save spare wheel and try and find a full size alloy wheel from fleabay. There is a boot conversion available from VW so that the boot floor is flat. I can't remember what the part numbers were. You will need to cut them a bit so it fits properly.

Yup - many imports do not have spares. There is a really interesting post in these forums on the things to look out for on imported GTI's
