good price for a mk1?
« on: 30 November 2008, 18:40 »
hi guys. first time posting but iv been visiting the site for quite a while. looking at getting my first vw and have my eyes on a lovely mk1. im just wondering what would be a good price to pay for it? the lad wants 1200 but my budget really only stretches to 900ish.  its only got 90,000 on the clock with what seems to be a mint interior. apperently theres a bit of rust and bubbling that needs looked at and the front right camber is tilting inwards. . . . is this serious work and what would be a good offer to make? the car really does look the business besides these problems. thanks a million and any advice would be appreciated

Front camber is not a problem as this is adjustable, assuming nothing is bent....worth checking wishbone.
Surface rust is not a huge problem, but sometimes difficult to eradicate completely without cutting out all the rust area and welding in new steel. Most cars this age will have some problem with this....sometimes 'repaired', only to appear later.
Serious rust is underneath....look for corrosion round the area where the rear beam bolts onto the floor section, get underneath with a torch and have a good poke with a screwdriver....this is common in Mk1s and expensive to repair properly unless you are handy with welding kit, then it's time consuming. But finding a bit of evidence here is a good bargaining point.
