Another 16v question.
« on: 19 November 2008, 18:57 »
Rather than tag onto the last thread, I thought I would start another.

In peoples experience on here, we, as in my mate and I, are after advice on cam options and gearbox options to compliment the engine.
We are going to build a 2.0 16v, whether its a KR, 6a or 9a, we are undecided. We need to do more homework. But we are going to retain the original head as fitted to the KR and gas flow it. Now the throttle body has already been airflowed and knife edged. The induction manifold has been gas flowed and smoothed a little. He is running an after market air filter assembly and has a tubular manifold connected to a Jetex exhaust. The exhaust valves are and will be remaining standard.
What realistic can shafts would be the best to fit to this set up? We still want day to day driveability and also pass the MOT obviously, but the car will also be being used for track day purposes as well as fairly long distance driving from time to time.
Also, at the moment he is running a MKIII gearbox. Which one I have no idea. What gearbox options would anybody suggest?
Car BTW is a 1988 Jetta GTX.

The KR cams on a 2.0 are reckoned the best standard cams. Mine certainly shifts with them in.

the KR and ABF   both have very good cams in them anyway.   a lot of people find that any aftermarket ones that offer enough extra power to make them worth it just make the enigne unpleasant for daily driveing.
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

if its running on k-jet you dont have a lot of choice for aftermarket filter assemblies, and they're all pretty rubbish anyway. stick with the stock one and if you really must chuck money at it put a k&n filter in, but a boggo mann paper one is more than good enough!
