Random oil buzzer??
« on: 10 October 2008, 20:23 »
Hi all
I have an annoying intermitent problem with my recently purchased 16v GTI.
At random times the oil buzzer sounds, it happens throughout the rev range. Its done this since I purchased it and the previous owner also flagged the problem to me, so this leads me to believe its not down to low oil pressure (the oil light does not flash either when the buzzer sounds). If I give the top of the dash a tap with my hand the problem goes away until it decides to start up again.
Should I start by replacing the oil pressure sensors, the buzzers circuit board behind the dash or does anyone have any other suggestions?
Any help is greatly appreciated, as its my daily and its driving me mad on the way to work!!

Cheers

look at your sump mate , my 8v did the same and i found the sump had taken a batter earlier in it's life and was pushed into the oil pick-up pipe :)

either that try changing the oil with a genuine filter and 10w40 oil

Hi sidecarphil
thanks for the reply, I done an oil change with VAG filter and 10w40 oil last weekend and didnt notice anything seriously wrong with the sump (not that I was really checking to be honest).
Ill take a look in the morning to double check though.
Any other suggestions?

Try removing sump and cleaning to oil pick up pipe. May also be a faulty sender unit?

I had the same problem eventually found to be instrument cluster to be at fault.

Im leaning towards it being the circuit in the instrument cluster as you suggest based on the fact it goes away with smack on the top of the dash.
Ill have a nose at the pressure sensors first for any loose wires etc as I dont really fancy getting dirty removing the sump if I dont have to!

Dropping the sump is not the easiest thing to do by a million miles, so eliminate everything else first. I would go with a sensor, wiring, or clocks fault.

Alternatively it could be something more serious, but hopefully not!

Im pretty sure its sorted now.
Checked the 2 sensors on the oil filter housing amd the wiring on the brown sensor was hanging on by a thread. I gave it a nice tight crimp together and took it for a 5 minute spin to check it over and no buzzer. Ill reserve judgement though until Monday when I do my normal commute.
My hands stay clean for another day!! Horrah
Thanks for the help guys
