PAS Pump alignment??
« on: 08 October 2008, 17:12 »
My car has just gone back on th road after quite some time off it!! Upon changing the fan belt I noticed the PAS Pump is out of alginment.
I had prevoiusly changed the mounting braket as the old one had broken at the mountings.
Im preety sure they were exactly the same as the old one as I checked before fitting but now my belt is definately out of line??
Has anyone encountered this before. VW list a spacer for deisels.... My only othe option is to space te pump with washers??

not all of the pas pumps are the same, also some of the pullys are diffrent.

if the pully is sticking to far out that normaly means 16v bits have found there way in over the years

if it's to far in i'm not sure. possobly combo of pump pully and that bracket

all the VW's have gone bar 1.

ahh that explains it,  for some reason i presumed you had an 8 valve  sorry.

sounds like you have 8 valve bits on there then.     the 16v has a wider cambelt hence pully whitch pushes the pully for the pas out a bit further, hence the 8 and 16v pas asseblys are not fully interchangable even tho they look identical,  not sure on whitch parts vary i "think" the brackets are the same and the differance is in the pump and pully but not sure
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Hmmm The guy in my local VW Stealership said there is only one pump n pulley except for the spacer which is for a diesel..... Not that i entirely trust his rather uninformed opinon.... The pum acctually fell off the engine when i frist baught the car as the braket was broken... So im not sure what has been messed with!!! Can i check ETKA on line anywhere?? im driving to italy next week!!!!

right after bumbeling through etka i've managed to confuse myself.

apperntly there is only one pump but i'm convinced there are two as i've had issues with this before iirc they are virtualy identical but one has a slightly longer shaft ( this chould have be an aftermarket part tho)

there are quite a few diffrent cranckshaft and waterpump pullys listed in etka tho
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

There is only 1 pump listed in etka (not that this always means anything!), but there are several different pullies listed.  All the brackets have the same part numbers 8v/16v, so the difference is not those.
In fact the early 16v has the same pully as the 8v, it changed on chassis # break F1G-MW240 001/MB075 001
early kr pulley is 027 145 255, late is 051 145 255.  I think the difference is when the slipper pulley on the waterpump was introduced/dropped?  Cant remember if it was the early or late KRs that had them.

do you have the old bracket to check the part number, and is there one on the new bracket?
