Starter Motor Trouble

A while back I was having trouble with my starter but a new spade connector seemed to sort it, but, now it wont turn at all have yet to try bridging it as havent had time.

The thing that is confusing me though is that the rev counter jumps around with a turn of the ignition???

Anybody got any idea's

Do you get 12v to the starter motor? If you do whack the solenoid and the main body of the starter motor with something enough to shock it. The fault maybe due to something sticking inside.

On the other hand, if you are not getting 12v to the starter, check your fuses and it may be possible that your ignition switch or immobiliser is faulty.

On my 16v, the rev counter used to jump when the hall sender of the dizzy was playing up, i don't know if this applies to your situation though. Could be possible the voltage going to the stater which isn't consuming it, is making other units play around. (that was an un-educated guess!)

i dont know about jumpy revs
but when i first got mine it started i then drove 2 mins to shop came out and as if battery completely flat went to auto electrician for alternator/battery tested both ok so bought another starter to try and when removing 13mm nut from power cable the stud just broke out of the solenoid so looks like housing was cracked
so had to fit new starter been ok ever since

Also check the earths, mine did this and I had advice from master rubjonny and put an earth to the starter motor bolt that goes through the bellhousing

had this problem only last week. I fixed it by detaching the earths, sanding of all of the crap on them and the chasis contacts.

Took a wee while to make the connection properly again, but now she starts fine.

Try it and see.

Also you can put the car in 4th and rock it back and forward instead of bashing it

bashing startermotors has to be advised against,   it's not unknown for it to cause the mangnets to move of breack up  whitch results in a competly dead starter

if you are going to bash, dont use a metal hammer,

use the shaft of it , or a nylon  mallet

if you have to use a metal hammer then use a whack a thick piece of wood and dont whack the starter directly

tissues with the starter can result in many an issue,  the solenoid might stick, the pinion, gear sleeve bearing, armature brushes etc etc.
As someone who worked in the refurbishment starter industry i would advise for the price to get it refurbished,  > £25  yes but better than pushing a 1 ton vehicle around
