cambelt kits
« on: 13 November 2008, 10:37 »
It's a passat B5, but it's the 1.8T 20V engine (AEB I believe)

I've been looking through my service history, and it looks like my timing belt was done at 79,000 miles in 2003, and it's now on 134,000 miles..  can't find any mention of the tensioner having been done at all, so I think I'll do belt, tensioner, and water pump.

I've been looking for kits including all the necessary bits...  but I can find ones that include the belt, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and the hydraulic tensioner unit for around £110 shipped (ebay).  There also seems to be a kit which has all the bits apart from the hydralic tensioner itself, which is only £50 shipped...(with an oil filter) but I can't find the hydraulic tensioner for less than something like £70 by itself...  From what I've read VW will charge around £90 for this.

Also, am I correct in thinking that an AEB engine in an Audi is basically identical to an AEB engine in a passat?  I've found a water pump advertised as being for an Audi A4 or A6, but it lists the AEB engine as one of the blocks it will work with...

Any pointers as to where to get a kit from?  I've looked at GSF and it looks like I can get some parts from there, though not all (can't find the hydraulic tensioner or water pump).  Anyone know anywhere else decent?  I've looked about but not found much.  I'll pop into VW later and see how much they want for stuff (I read somewhere they sell recon Water pumps to save some £, I'll see how much they are, the Audi one is £34 shipped)

Thanks for reading...
Sold the VR6... Now officially An Old Man With A Passat Estate.  At least it's a 1.8T
