Having to remove the head from my golf to do the head gasket but there's two bolts (on the front and rear of the right hand side of the manifold, looking from the front) that I cant seem to get to, is there a secret tip or way of attack that I should know of?
one of the studs had snapped off and it would seem that a lot of the manifold nuts are seized, looks like once if i manage to get the head off I'm going to have a mare with them, hope i can get some heat on them or soak them in wd 40 so they will loosen.
Also can I get new studs on the exhaust manifold fitted when i take the head to the machine shop to get it skimmed?

When I did mine, all the studs unscrewed along with the nuts! I bought new studs from VW for a few quid and screwed them in via the "two nut trick".

As for undoing the manifold, there were two that were very difficult - I bought a slimline set of ring spanners (they don't round the nuts off) and this did the job, as there wasn't enough room to get my socket in.

For the other bolts you'll need a wide variety of extension bars and wobble bits.

...And a lot of patience.

i left it on, and lifted the head off with the manifold and down pipe still attatched, much easyer if you can split the exhaust easy anoth!
