GTI vs VR6...part ex advice purlease...

My little mate Robbie has put his Jreg Fiesta RS up for sale. It's mechanically ok, but the bodywork is not 100%.

Today, he has had p ex offers on 2 Mk 3's.

1. K-reg gti, 86k, lady owner
2. L reg VR6 138K

Now, the bloke with the VR6 offered a straight swap, and the bird with the GTI says part ex (presumably car+ cash for fiesta)

What would you go for?? And what things to look out for/ask when he sees these golfs??

hmm now, i personnally like the fiesta rs( i assume you mean the turbo!! as the 1800rs is shate!!)

if i were your mate id grab the vr6, cause it sounds to me like the bloke/lad etc dont know what hes got!! lol (check expansion bottle for signs of stuffed head gasket etc, but other wise chat wise vr6 for comonly buyer typr things!!!) this seem s agood fast way to get out of a ford and into a vw!!as for the mk3 8v , we no disrespect to the 8v but the fiesta is a much faster and more fun car!!! ive had one chipped and tuned to fu@k and they are great, but if a vw is what he wants then go get, im only sayin my peice as after the golf the escort and fiesta rs turb are my 2nd fave cult car and i know how much you peeps hate but i still have a soft spot for em lol!!!

The sensible side of me would personally go for the GTI, as it's less miles etc. Plus, he is only a young lad (not 21 yet) and the insurance could be a killer  

Although, saying that, he did once manage to get insured on a sierra cossie  . And yes, he drove it like he stole it

having owned all things RS turboed including the fiesta i can personally say inmo that the fiesta was the worst.... the fiesta was just never thought about inmo... for instant it would get hot and overheat very quickly and the t2 turbo was w@nk... and before i get slated my fiesta had only 46k on it and was absolutely mint and still in one month i sspent 600 in just repari bills.

so take the VR6 and bite his hand off as you do it.... i wouldnt worry to much about the mileage either as they are good for it and i think your mate will like it alot better as well and as they are alot more car for the money.

Got to be VR6,  check that the oil has been changed very regularly, as it needs to be to keep the cam chains in good condition.  Also head gaskets can be troublesome on early VR6s.  If these points are ok then tell him to get the VR6!

good job my fiesta rs had a hybrid t3 on it, over sized intercooler and rad twin fans etc and never over heated!! lol i did here the t2 turbos were a bit pants!!
