2.0l bottom end conversion economy and setup
« on: 28 September 2008, 13:06 »
Hi guys,

I've been researching into putting a 2e bottom end into my '88 8v digifant and just wanted to ask some questions about the setup, economy and what its like to live with. From what i've read i can't seem to find a great deal about these do just wanted to clarify a few things.

/ When i put a 2e bottom end and use my 1.8 head, i retain all my loom etc but do i need to get something for my ecu or similar to adjust the fueling and get  it set up correctly?

/ What kind of economy do people get as i would want to retain as much of that as possible, i'm getting around 40mpg with my 8v currently.

Any feedback would be great.
Thanks

Are you just sticking with a standard head/cams etc or are these going to be upgraded to?

Ideally the fuelling needs improving at the top end but there isnt a lot you can really do with the standard digi II management, iirc stealth racing in southam can write you a custom chip which would improve it but it still wont be 100%

Recently me and a friend carried out this conversion to his car but he has hardly used it since as the bodywork is getting attention now so cant really comment on fuel consumption

He has a stage 3 head on his and has been advised to up the fuel pressure, there are a couple of ways to do this, one is to use a regulator from a porsche 944 turbo iirc which boosts pressure from 3bar to 3.5bar although you lose around 7mpg

2ltr is very easy to live with.  nearly all my golfs have ended up 2ltr at some point.

economy dosent change much to be fair,  you'll see if big differance if your takeing  nearly dead enigne out, but healthy 1.8 to heathy 2.0 thers bugger all in it, the 2.0 will pull in higher gears at lower revs giveing a bit more than the 8v  but it'll slurp a bit more when flat out.

2e bottom end on stock pb head shoudl give 120 - 130 bhp   with good torqe. getting a decent chip is highly recomended  will cost about £70- 80
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Just out of interest, any specific ones that you've experienced?

I have this conversion on mine and I get about 34mpg.  Runs really well with a 1.8 head and as said gives good torque low down.

ok so i would get a decent chip and like Mew has asked, which ones are good to go for? what would happen if i didn't get a chip and ran it completely standard on all the 1.8 management? would that damage the engine or just not get the most out of it?

the 2.0 will run fine on std 1.8 managment and it won't damage anythign it just won't have as much grunt up top as it chould.  the more you tweek the enigne the more benifit the correct chip wil give as  with the ecu std 135  140 about it  ( injectors give up about then as well ) you just get more torqe  but a chip with a good fuel map for you mods and desinged to run with bigger injectors or a diffrent fpr can then unlock quite a lot of power.

i used to get  chips directly from local guy who put a lot of time effort in developing them for himself and other tuners these are the only ones i chould have recomended as had driven meany cars with his chips before and after  but he shut up shop as wasent makign any money :( .  ebay resistor chips and crap generic chips ripped the bottom out of the market.

it may be possible to still find the odd tuner that carries a stock of chips ( or still has some left ) that have been desinged to work with a certan set of mods in mind.    most popular one i rember was specked for 2ltrs 270 cam , 4 branch mani , mild head work if want chould try and find out who sold it and what it was badged as
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
