MK1 GTI, will start but not run
« on: 03 October 2008, 13:07 »
I have a caddy and it has 1.6gti running gear fitted, but a 1.8 block and head. This has been rebuilt and has a shrick cam. I can getit to start but it will not run, we have had it running but it will not stay running, We have the accumulator fitted but we have a bosch inline fuel pump which is 5 bar.

Fuel is getting to the injectors from the airbox and i have had it running but the throttle response is delayed and inconsistant. when we had it ticking over, it was at abotu 900rpm, but was rough.

Im not used to the K-jet, so any clues?

Have you checked all vacuum lines are in the right place and well secured?

i must admit that the small thin pipe which goes from the throtle body to the piping off of the manifold is not secured, i have been olding it on firmly but the difference is not that great, I shall try it and get back to you

Hi

I take it you have just rebuilt it?  If not ignor below,

Have you got a adjustable cam wheel?  If so the timing has to be 98% on at the least, the k-jet system is very sensitve to the timing, as the injectors only inject for a short time, and not a lot when they do.  I had loads of grief setting mine up, because the I run a race cam, the air flow is very slow, so it will not pull the air-flow plate up high enough when cranking the engine, the air flow plate directly controls the fuel delivery.

Easy way to test is take the air box intake pipe off, NOT the air box to inlet manifold pipe, and very carefully push the airflow plate up a little bit, it is really fragile and will not appricate some biff stuffing a screwdriver into the wrong parts of it, so make sure you push the plate only.
Get someone to crank the engine, it should fire and run, if it does, then get the timing sorted.

Hope the above helps
