Another Mk2 2.0 8v conversion question?!?!?
« on: 24 September 2008, 16:37 »
Hi all,

i have tried searching for as much info as possible on this topic before i asked this, but i still have a few questions for u all.......... sorry if any of it has been mentioned already!?

Im just about to pull the engine out of my 8v GTI (once the rest of my bits get delivered), i have only recently bought the car and aparently the engine was rebuilt 20,000 miles ago, and a piper 276 cam and vernier pulley fitted and the head has been ported and polished. i have just bought a 4-2-1 stainless manifold for it, along with these mods i am considering converting it to 2.0ltr while the engine is out, but what i really want to know is what kind of gains am i likely to expect from the conversion?!

If i do go for the conversion, will any 2ltr block do?! (i saw someone on here mention a short block?!)

all help much apreciated
cheers

2E or AGG bottom end.

The AGG is better as it has a crank position sensor.  This means you can fit more advanced management at a later date, should you so wish.

You should expect more torque and driveability after the conversion, as it is a longer-stroke motor.  I wouldn't get too excited about the on-paper gains though.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

2E is probably the more common.  It's in Passats, Golfs, Skodas and Seats of a certain age.  The AGG is basically the later version.  I found mine in a 1997 Toledo 2.0i Sport and I suspect you'll find it in a wide variety of VAG group metal.  It'll quite possibly be cheaper out of Skodas and Seats, too.

There is also an ADY engine which you can use, if using the ADY or AGG you will need to use a 2E dizzy to get it to run properly on mk2 management

There is also the bubble block which iirc is coded 3a but im not 100% on this

bubbel block  is a bit rare and expensive,  it's found in audis    same block hight as the 1.8 so has short rods
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

is it the AGG code block that has the wrong dizzy for mk2 managment, or is it the other later one?
