Allen Key Brake Bolts
« on: 30 August 2008, 19:45 »
My car went in for an mot and failed on full set of discs and pads.

We got the discs and pads but have been having so much trouble with the allen key brake bolts. We seem to have tried quite a few things but they don't seem to want to budge.

Does anyone have any ideas or advice of when they did their brakes?

Have you rounded the heads??  if not get a big tube on the end of the key.  If they do round off, eitheer cut a slot in them or just chew the heads off with the grinder.  Also if it helps you only need to take one bolt out to do the discs and pads, id pick the top one!

Have you undone the 15mm hex bolts?  Could be worth doing them back up for extra leverage if you have.

Also buy some proper bits, allen keys are balls

Heat the bolt/area with a gas blow torch. Be careful obviously

hammer a splined socket over the whole bolt so it just grips and then it should come out.

Managed to get them all off. A lot of brute force and with the help of my brother who seems to manage to use every tool that he has until he gets the job done.

Thanks for the advice.
