Rattly pas pump
« on: 22 August 2008, 23:27 »
My pas pump seems to have developed a rattle, which sounds very much bearings related (its still got plenty of tension in the belt).
Thing is, its on a G60, and i cant find any replacements online! Are there any models that use an identical pump?

Additionally, if it fails, will my steering go all to pot or will it just make driving a little bit more difficult, which i can live with for the time being until i find a replacement?

Cheers!

It will be very hard, and probably very dangerous to drive if the pump fails. To get a demo, try and turn the wheel without the engine on - its much harder than a non-PAS setup.

Are you sure its your PAS pump?

Reason I ask is I have recently cured a rattle from around that area. It turned out to be the inner of the 2 pulleys on the water pump. It is known as a 'slipper' pulley, and has a bearing in it which cannot be changed from what I could see.

I replaced this with another used one, as they are now obsolete from VW, and the rattle was no more!

Check it out b4 you go replacing the PAS pump.

Ok, so im a retard.

I heard said noise while it was dark, and sourced it to the PAs pump. However, due to the darkness i failed to notice the fact that it had sprayed all of its PAS fluid over my drive, and the rattling was actually a pas pump trying to pump air.

Sorted my leak out, filled her up with halfords pas fluid, fired her up, bled the pas system, and the rattle stopped

Feel free to point and laugh!

What a wayne kerr..........

Actually, that's possibly better than when you put in your new engine and had a black wire from the ecu left over that was exactly the right length to go to the battery, but still wondered why the car wouldn't start

*To anyone that doesn't get it, it was the earth for the ecu

Still, at least you know how to put oil in a (gay) car that you've had for 2 years!
