giving/accepting cash or going through the insurance?
« on: 19 February 2008, 14:45 »
I've been reading a few crash threads recently and i'm interested in the route people take regarding claims? i'm just curious for future reference ( a bit pesemistic but better being prepared than clueless). if John Smith drove into the back of someone and the person infront wants to claim what should he do?

go through insurance?
Tell them to get the damage assesed then hand over cash?

likewise the other way: if john smith got bumped from behind

go through insurance?
offer to get the damage assesed and take cash?

i suppose it would depend on age and NCB protected or unprotected. i'mm really interested though because i'd usually want to carry out all repairs myself if possible so i'd generally ask for cash, but is this a bad idea?? what do others do?

some 106 once slammed her breaks on becuase of an 'idiot infront' and i flew into the back of her and the front end looked like a bomb site. she didn't have any damage and just said oh it's ok leave it. so i pissed of before she changed her mind, but later i wonder if she did it on purpose and if i could have got anything out of it?

And you wouldnt of got anything out of this claim when YOU HIT HER. Even if she said dont worry (she may have been at fault) you would have lost. I am waiting over 14months now for an insurance claim from somethign that wasnt my fault. let alone something that is!

that's what it's there for... unless it literally is the silliest thing in the world..

I once saw this volvo extremely slowly nudge this car from behind and cracked 1 of tailights, so they sorted it out in cash there and then. But other than that insurance every time.

Depends, if you're young and in your first couple of years driving, that first year's no claims can make a very big difference...  so if it's up to £500 or so it might actually work out better financially to give cash, or you end up with a claim on your record for 5 years which over that time will easily add up to more than £500 in increased premiums...

If you're older, or have protected NCD, then may as well go through insurance...

If your blatently in the wrong and you done wanna lose your no claims and have got the money I would pay cash. It will save you more money in the long run and will take you years to get your claims back.
