The haynes manual doesn't say?

Yes, rear wheel bearings on mk3's are tappered.

Tighten the nut up with just the weight of your hand on the socket bar whilst turning the disc backwards, loosen off and do this 2 or 3 times. Then make sure the washer underneath will just move with a screwdriver, then you should be st.
