MK2 GOlf 16V not idling properly
« on: 29 April 2008, 20:15 »
All, my 92 Golf MK2 16V is not idling properly. I have had the idle stabilisation valve replaced, the idle stabilisation valve relay controller (£320 plus fitting) replaced and the throttle body cleaned out. It has been with two specialists and they have faikled to cure the problem, has anyone got any ideas on what to do next? Neil Gillespie

could be alot of things really. but i would look at the ECU, earth cables, the electrical system and the vaccum piping around the engine.

I have just had this problem, I have fixed it as follows.

1. Cleaned out the air box, new air filter - still won't idle

2. Checked all the inlet hoses, found a split, repaired that - still won't idle

3. Replaced all the vacuum lines, started hunting at idle

4. Adjusted the mixture using the air screw at throttle body and adjusted the mixture screw in the air box - idles perfectly when warm, stalls when cold.

5. Checked out the three senders on the right hand side of the block, 1 feeds the temp guage, 1 feeds the ECU and the other feeds the Idle speed control valve, two of mine were faulty £10 fix from GSF, idles perfectly now.

Hope that helps you.

What is the mileage on the car, and when was the last Cambelt and timing done. Check the CO2 mixture. Have you adjusted the Idle Valve Screw ?

could be the vaccum pipe below the air box. happened on mine and would stall now and again as well. it's not a very good fitting and only just slips together.

other than that, could be the thermostat or cold start sensor.

I made a fairly exhaustive list a while back of possible 16v idle issue causes:

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=71501.msg569972#msg569972

Most common causes are failed idle switch or air leaks. Weirdly, mine was solved with an oil change... Check that one out!!! (long story)

Good luck, and let us know how you got on.

It's not a problem just an undocumented feature! think they just do run lumpy on tickover. :)
