Ignition Upgrade KR with webber carbs
« on: 07 April 2008, 14:12 »
Hi, i'm posting this to try & help a friend out!

I have fitted Twin 45 webber carbs to my 1.8 16V (mk1), car runs okay, but i want to do away with the original ignition ECU & fit coil with ignition module directly from hall sender,  looking for some wiring diagrams or what coils/ignition modules to use.  Ive been looking at a coil from a MK3 etc, it has 3 wires on the ignition module only & theres three on my hall sender.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank You

leave the MK2 coil in there, much better than the MK3 rubbish!  Plus you need the ignition ECU or the car wont run, on the MK3 the ignition control is built into the main ECU.
The only difference between the MK2 & MK3 coil is that the MK3 coil has the TCI-H unit built into it, rather than seperate like the MK2 system. Plus the MK3 system fails more often ;)

The only 'upgrade' you can do is fit an aftermarket electronic ignition unit, say megasquirt or megajolt.  There isn't much point though, the MK2 16v system is fine :)

Thanks rubjonny!     I don't think he's bothering with the upgrade now, i think it's just because on low revs the cars a bit spluttery with the carbs, it runs amazing otherwise!

To be honest his main problem now is the car eats up inner cv joints & shafts, probably cause its got plenty of poke and its honked on its ass! lol

Its a great wee car!

yeah you get that with carbs, this is where magasquirt & megajolt can help as you can really fine tune the ignition map etc. Problem is the cost, which by the sounds of it the money is better off saved for a stash of cv joints
