Are mk1 & mk2 discs direct swap?
« on: 07 May 2008, 17:48 »
I have used the search function but haven’t really found out what I want to know so sorry if this has been covered already!

I have a 1.8 mk2 driver with the standard 239mm solid discs and a mk1 caddy 1.6d with solid front discs which are properly wafer thin, about half what they should be!!

Q. I need to know: If I replaced the discs and pads on the mk2 with vented discs and the narrower gti pads could I just take the solid discs & pads off the mk2 and put them straight onto the mk1 caddy?

Thanks in advance

doubt it, you'd probably need to do the cailpers aswell. To be fair why do you wana do this anyway? aint guna increase braking power by bugger all anyway. if you want the brakes to be better on the mk1 i'd get the systems bled, some green stuff pads and some goodridge hoses, cheap but affective.

Sounds like he was just wanting to save about £40 for the parts.
I also think you'd need the capilers at least.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Yeh. Saving a few quid on the caddy (my budget project) making use of the old mk2 parts and stopping brake fade on the mk2 was the idea.

This is what I think I know at the moment: Tell me if im wrong though :undecided:

Solid discs are advertised as fitting mk1 & mk2 golfs so the discs must be the same diameter and thickness, solid discs on the 1.8 driver are 239mm/12mm.

On the mk2 driver you can fit mk2 gti vented 239mm/20mm discs with the thinner gti pads without changing the calliper apparently. Under heading 'Mk2 Gl and Drivers' at:

So from what I have read it should be an easy swap, but, if anyone has had experience let me know!
