Evening guy's and gal's!

Just bought a black 83 mk1, one owner from new, 1.8gti, needs paint and work but i'm thinking i want to strip, re-paint and upgrade with new engine.

As i'm new to GTI ownership i'm thinking of going the 1.6v route, can your combined knowledge please help me out as to whats required?

Cheers.

Will.

to do a 2 litre 16v conversion you would need:
engine (obviously), all the wiring from donor car and ecu, new exhaust manifold to fit in a mk1, gearbox not sure if the gearbox mounts are the same so it could need welding, all the other bits e.g inlet manifold, dizzy, altenator......everything really easiest way is prob to buy a right off that has been rear ended and just rip evrything out that you need. ohh you need custom driveshatfts as mk1 ones are too small (i think) and whatever the donor car is will be too big (again i think) check out www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk i'm pretty sure somewhere on there is a full walkthrough and plenty of people have done it on there.

hope that helps dude...

Cheers Rusty, sounds like a little more than i want to do to go the 16v route, also been told to put a 2l bottom end in from an Audi and get the head ported and polished.

Anyone tell me what improvement this will make?

Cheers.

Will.

porting and polishing the head will increase bhp basically helps fuel and air flow if i'm right as a standard head although they look smooth they have tiny pits in the metal which collects crap affecting your fuel flow (i think), not really sure of the benefits of putting a audi bottom end on but i have heard of it being done so there must be a good reason for it.

audi 2 litre bottom end will give you more torque lower down, deffo worth doing as is getting the head and inlet manifold ported and polished (the inlet needs to be done so the ports match up with the enlarged ports on the head) and you could do with an audi or mk2 golf 16v throttle body for larger butterflies, alongside that you have use a 16v iirc warm up reg for increased fuelling, venier pulley for more accurate timing abilities especially with the cam.

baffled sumps, induction kits or drilled airbox's, new injectors help aid to some degree as would a free flowing exhaust system, 4 branch mani and ss pipe

i think the most you will achieve with a k-jet and mods is around 140-150 which is stdish 16v power but i love the 8v engines and if your cam belt snaps you aint looking at a costly repair bill :)

i have just finished putting my engine together and i am running a 2.0 audi bottom end with a ported and polished head with larger exhaust valves, a piper cam  (fast rd) and twin 45's, 4-1 down pipe and miltek exhaust straight through, hoping to get her fired up for the 1st time ton ight, so i will let you know how she goes...she will have to go on the rollers to be set up properly and then i can get a good idea of performance figures

let me know what figures you get mate as ill be running the same setup, 1.8 head 285 cam 2l bottom end and twin 40s

Will, where are you in the uk, ive got a mk1 golf gti 1600 with a ported head and 285 cam and gearbox, shells currently stripped, no doors or bonnet but has no rot or rust on it, got loads of bits. got mot till november and on a sorn currently. i stripped the car with the intention of putting the engine into my other mk1 on twin 40s but ive now sourced a ported 1.8 head so the 1.6 gti lump is for sale.

im in manchester, drop me a pm if you want more pics or details
